Costs, Benefits, & Pricing of Customer Distributed Energy Resources in a Utility Distribution Grid

The traditional utility planning and business model build on the assumption of the utility providing energy to meet he entire needs of its service territory requires considerable rethinking and revision because of the significant growth of customer-owned distributed energy resources. Much of pressure for this change comes from a rapid increase in rooftop solar PV installations. New investments, new policy, and new pricing are needed to handle this two way flow of electricity on the utility's distribution grid, where the utility will function as the "Distribution Platform Provider." Pricing based on the value of the distributed energy resources must also consider the cost based rates recovering existing utility investments and fairness to other customers who do not own distributed energy resources. A recent case study will be presented quantifying the costs and benefits of rooftop solar PV from the perspectives of the customer owning the distributed energy resource and the utility managing the distribution grid. Several cost=based pricing alternatives will also be summarized. Attendees will benefit from this presentation as ana excellent introduction to the many interesting energy issues that will be part of "Our Changing Energy Landscape" RMAEE Annual Energy Forum  in the following month.
